Plans were organized by prisoners. Colonel Rose from PA 7th cavalry was the main organizer of the escape. To gain access to number 11 “Rat Hell” the prisoners had to remove the hearth in number 6. They worked at night in number 11 taking turns digging through the area in number 15 for the tunnel. It took 50 nights to complete this endeavor. Groups of 14 prisoners would crawl through the tunnel. Colonel Boyd was in the second group.

Let’s follow on the path to Boyd’s escape on the next screen. Some of the prisoners were recaptured while escaping and were reincarcerated into Libby Prison.        Let’s see what Colonel Boyd's fate was!
