Dr. J. C. Richards was in charge of one of three hospitals. Major Todd, Mrs. Lincoln's brother, attempted to force his way in the Richard's home when his daughter threatened to use an axe on him. It didn't work and their home on South Main Street was burned and they saved only the clothes they were wearing.
