The Wanamaker story- They moved to Chambersburg around 1860. Nelson was a brickmaker with two sons, John and William. They built Wanamaker Row, a group of townhouses still standing today "See the picture on the left". The family survived the burning, but Nelson committed suicide in 1862. His brother-in-law, Will Kochersperger of the 20th Pa. Cavalry was on detached duty in Chambersburg from General Couch's headquarters. He was disguised in civilian clothing, but a Confederate found him and confined him to a burning house . However, he escaped through a window and walked to Shippensburg.
